I love using <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/CCSS-Sight-Word-Mats-FREE-1350721">Sight Word Mats</a>- especially for workstations. I can easily change out the manipulatives and the students get practice with the sight words they need in a tactile way. Since multi-sensory opportunities are so important, this is one way for students to engage with sight words in a tactile way. They are also an easy to differentiate work station! </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/CCSS-Sight-Word-Mats-FREE-1350721"><img border="0" height="355" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgCEeZudRKn6cSyde-BXFxpFoYo4kWmzhOlD1PGCOluptqeCapE0hx9YcTjWeQ238QbQYVqOP-oBC7b9msw6edHPwG_P7HTFayfD236kl1RBlzklwKExEO461QCVHUCwobJcejxzac2fus/w355-h355/puff+ball+sight+words.jpg" width="355" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/CCSS-Sight-Word-Mats-FREE-1350721"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiRuof01tgfWxQ7Z2N8m9h9b8bHKVTlA-KSL_2zm_AfQ4CSZbaEhsyDeAM31g4AluUCwUBaG8EdrHo8qRWea5_2mKF0i1fEOq44QxvnlklvwyjTFKsaJv8_jVKeUym2Vjf2dLc1OOkI8zg/s320/lego+sight+words.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br style="text-align: left;" /><div>I like using small Sterilite containers with snap lids to store manipulatives. My students love these to practice reading in context! These can also be easily differentiated based on student need. My intervention groups like using them on "Wacky Wordy Wednesday" where we learn new word patterns. I've also used them at a word work work station. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-NO-PREP-BUNDLE-Mixed-Up-Sentences-Build-it-Draw-it-Write-it-1862851">This bundle</a> contains short vowel, long vowel, blends, and digraphs! </div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/A-NO-PREP-BUNDLE-Mixed-Up-Sentences-Build-it-Draw-it-Write-it-1862851"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivsXDG8LXY97oPaisDb_MB4NTvDcgI2pJA_xjJ2WXpo1tY5GZsn3QBjhjF_D9NiCRYd2yt5AjNjKyMiKa2KGxMVww29cxsxQUwwpJ9GaVDtYNeD9Gs3Xz7iRvJYHQ2ONy9M5WOqWL7FK8/s400/phonics+build+it.jpg" width="400" /></a></div></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;">You can check out other great tips and advice from other Reading Crew members to get your school year off to a great start when you download our <a href="https://drive.google.com/file/d/1J-ae04Rh_V_36dtZ9gDQUQg2vKedPfpP/view?usp=sharing">Back-To-School Resource E-book</a> for some amazing back-to-school resources and enter to win a copy of all the products featured! </div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSZZI4g9yDMsVMBLJzHxNZkRatjAIAMO2nJ-HbmC-xlWt-ZE_mtK7bpavV-Bu0KbEtYmBmqBItm1nLz3ZMhTF-EcFFxvBkSXCBIqkuMiX7hNOb93MrTTVa4GIJs8mp6RF9sAbStsy74cs/" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="500" data-original-width="800" height="316" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjSZZI4g9yDMsVMBLJzHxNZkRatjAIAMO2nJ-HbmC-xlWt-ZE_mtK7bpavV-Bu0KbEtYmBmqBItm1nLz3ZMhTF-EcFFxvBkSXCBIqkuMiX7hNOb93MrTTVa4GIJs8mp6RF9sAbStsy74cs/w505-h316/IMG_2538.jpg" width="505" /></a></div><br /><br /></div>

<br />
My family has always loved board games. The past couple of years, we have branched out from traditional board games and I have been buying games that are more STEM related. Here are some of our favorite games that I've brought into the classroom!<br />
<br />
In the classroom, it is really easy to add a <b>Thinking Games or Problem Solving Games</b> work station during math time. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Think-Fun-1006-T-Gravity-Maze/dp/B00IUAAK2A/ref=sr_1_9?ie=UTF8&qid=1498582030&sr=8-9&keywords=stem">Gravity Maze</a> is a favorite. Students love solving the puzzles and it challenges their thinking.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPa8JQ7v38pgyoDubcJICT3KpLa4hWXOLas34umdtAKXpbUoHuj2t_mKq6KZjKGkASrnDtNEhLWP8kBvqK5QlgjXuUI2Wk9nChxGKbcjPdvtQ_WFnR1n3O_qLzcBmPyQNJmAu17hMb_1Q/s1600/818-eLy6yML._SY500_.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgPa8JQ7v38pgyoDubcJICT3KpLa4hWXOLas34umdtAKXpbUoHuj2t_mKq6KZjKGkASrnDtNEhLWP8kBvqK5QlgjXuUI2Wk9nChxGKbcjPdvtQ_WFnR1n3O_qLzcBmPyQNJmAu17hMb_1Q/s400/818-eLy6yML._SY500_.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/Melissa-Doug-Suspend-Family-Game/dp/B007EA4UBY/ref=sr_1_14?ie=UTF8&qid=1498582030&sr=8-14&keywords=stem">Suspend</a> is another favorite. It is a balancing game that will challenge students and help them learn about engineering and science! It is also the one game that I have to remind students of their voice level!<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqbKxY7q54Q51H30DD2_Sh3oBqC2iI2eGAr_07WyU8lGkesj84UsOmja964hm7Kb-56I0Nqq2f0sKfEKQcepo__pClvJEmuHB4pFgWHt1SfnNQCcjS83quSgWbYx3iOQw9mAHwoGJr3oU/s1600/Screen+Shot+2017-06-27+at+11.58.52+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqbKxY7q54Q51H30DD2_Sh3oBqC2iI2eGAr_07WyU8lGkesj84UsOmja964hm7Kb-56I0Nqq2f0sKfEKQcepo__pClvJEmuHB4pFgWHt1SfnNQCcjS83quSgWbYx3iOQw9mAHwoGJr3oU/s320/Screen+Shot+2017-06-27+at+11.58.52+AM.png" width="304" /></a></div>

My son loves, loves, loves building with <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Goobi-Construction-Instruction-Learning-Assorted/dp/B0129F2JMA/ref=sr_1_1/134-2953013-5025847?ie=UTF8&qid=1498583218&sr=8-1&keywords=goobi">Gobbi </a>construction pieces! It involves problem solving, science, and engineering. I'm a little obsessive compulsive with the magnetic balls...I don't want them to get lost. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Last summer I made some posters for a friend and myself with a distressed wood look. This summer she asked if I would make her some <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Farmhouse-Decor-Pack-Editable-Labels-Binder-Covers-Posters-and-Banners-3252429">labels and banners</a> that coordinated. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Here are some photos of the farmhouse <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Farmhouse-Decor-Pack-Editable-Labels-Binder-Covers-Posters-and-Banners-3252429">decor pack</a> in use! The <a href="http://www.biglots.com/product/black-weave-baskets-with-lids-3-piece-set/p810349880?pos=1:1&Ntt=basket+lid">baskets</a> and <a href="http://www.biglots.com/product/white-magazine-storage-box/p810349513?pos=1:2&Ntt=magazine">book holders</a> are from Big Lots. The baskets come 3 in a pack and they come with a lid! The book holders are the best ones I have been able to find! I love how tall and sturdy they are! They are a big step up from my crates!</div>

<br />
I've been looking at Pinterest on ideas to help organize the packing-up process. I like leaving school knowing that things are cleaned and organized and I'm not returning to a mess in August. These are somethings that I always do each year.<br />
<ul>
<li>Organize filing cabinet</li>
<li>Clean out files</li>
<li>Throw stuff away!!!!!</li>
<li>Finalize Data Notebook</li>
<li>Clean/Organize Desk</li>
<li>Update computer files.</li>
</ul>
<div>
I love leaving school with my binders organized! This usually takes a half-day (usually I do this on the Saturday before school gets out), but it is totally worth it. I try really hard to file everything on Friday before I go, but the last weeks of school have so many priorities, this doesn't always happen.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq_2wdq_iRixaaQ4U0_1T7YMlD0EO55_9bue4Ux6C6zNvj5pz5JAmIYrM3y5C0r-g8rz9QShoMVFZxvekF-Q7SZag9GJrSJoOYKcEKxO5_uco9jCOLbX82n3S4aTUGfQ6DAh5_MPZAJKY/s1600/photo+2+%25281%2529.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgq_2wdq_iRixaaQ4U0_1T7YMlD0EO55_9bue4Ux6C6zNvj5pz5JAmIYrM3y5C0r-g8rz9QShoMVFZxvekF-Q7SZag9GJrSJoOYKcEKxO5_uco9jCOLbX82n3S4aTUGfQ6DAh5_MPZAJKY/s400/photo+2+%25281%2529.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Since I keep a binder system, I also keep the same system electronically. My files are all in folders that match the same title as my binders! I love it :) That's the last thing I do before I leave. Sometimes my electronic life gets a little out of control and things just end up in Downloads or on the Desktop (so I don't loose them).<br />
<br />
Years ago, <a href="http://www.cfclassroom.com/2013/06/packing-up-classroom-ending-school-year.html">The Clutter Free Classroom</a> suggested using clear tubs for packing! This is one of my favorite packing tips EVER!!! Just don't buy them too big or you won't be able to carry them out of school!<br />

</span><span style="color: #313131;">Jennifer says that it may seem like overkill to model and have kids do
certain things over and over until they get it correct, but it will be worth it
when they can do it automatically. It will save you from chaos and from wasting
valuable instruction time. Remember...wasted seconds and minutes each day can
add up to wasted hours and even DAYS over the period of a school year! Some
examples of things to perfect: Coming to meeting area, lining up, leaving
meeting area, drink and bathroom procedures, getting supplies, turning things
in, going to centers/stations, cleaning up centers/stations, meeting at small
group area.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Fidgets are a great way for students to receive sensory input in a way that doesn't distract others. I have found that it is very helpful to go over the rules and expectations for fidgets. <div style="text-align: center;">
The important thing about using fidgets in the classroom is to use them in a way that is helpful to the student and not distracting to everyone else. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The great thing about fidgets are all the different tactile options. My favorite fidget is a pink squishy ball, that feels soft, but you have to work to squeeze it. Some of my students like fidgets they can squeeze and stretch, while others like ones they can twist and wrap around their fingers. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My principal has purchased fidgets for our classrooms from the Therapy Shop. Below are my two favorite fidgets from them! I've also had really good luck at Target...especially in their dollar spot!</div>

<br />
<a href="http://luckylittlelearners.com/2016/01/flexible-seating.html">Lucky Little Learners</a> and this article by <a href="https://www.edutopia.org/blog/flexible-seating-student-centered-classroom-kayla-delzer">Kayla Delzer</a> inspired me to help one of my co-workers implement flexible seating. She used Donor Choose to fund her seating arrangement...as well as her own creativity to find ways to provide numerous options for students.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>What we Learned</b></div>
<br />
1) Set expectations, practice expectations, and be consistent with expectations. Every day she reviewed expectations and had I CAN statements for each seating area. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Flexible-Seating-Rules-and-Expectations-with-I-Can-Statements-2940958">These are available here.</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5_LoAZGpkS8qSU6TdeBA8tEEv9kqoh7mQE02QYtB8iCQJKmB4YZ9QKex7JIRDgNl2jvbQNxskSXD6kHerVeO5HrO0P6vuGeyN74qtEc3nvCaVEPVI5ZnLXQSZJVTodj5R8yT9FgiJCWM/s1600/Slide17.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi5_LoAZGpkS8qSU6TdeBA8tEEv9kqoh7mQE02QYtB8iCQJKmB4YZ9QKex7JIRDgNl2jvbQNxskSXD6kHerVeO5HrO0P6vuGeyN74qtEc3nvCaVEPVI5ZnLXQSZJVTodj5R8yT9FgiJCWM/s320/Slide17.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
2) Plan for fairness. It is important to let students choose where to seat, but nobody wants another management board. We solved this problem by using the team structure she already had in place in her classroom. Each team is assigned a day of the week and they get to pick first. It is easy to manage, and by the end of the week, every student has had a chance to pick their favorite flexible seating. I love using these brag tags by <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Brag-Tags-Flexible-Seating-2466466">Talking Piñata</a> to motivate students to do their best at their choice location! <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGDgwU72snI5txZc6a746PMut_H2wX6L0Z4c-ugRcxwfpUuk_Wxyw9uQlec0cUxzjIZkCSwrxgDCJHbGJbEfaa1TVa20N176SWNgY3FVHQXdWtkcYmUX5SrnjD4M323v6NLmQebcOaXCE/s1600/original-2466466-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGDgwU72snI5txZc6a746PMut_H2wX6L0Z4c-ugRcxwfpUuk_Wxyw9uQlec0cUxzjIZkCSwrxgDCJHbGJbEfaa1TVa20N176SWNgY3FVHQXdWtkcYmUX5SrnjD4M323v6NLmQebcOaXCE/s320/original-2466466-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
3) Consider your room layout. There were 5 student work tables in the classroom. There three additional tables in the classroom for work stations. We looked for options that were easy to work with tables and easy to store. For example, the scoop chairs can easily stack. Exercise cushions can easily be added to chairs. We also made sure we had clipboards to work if they were not at a table. This is what we used for flexible seating options for 20 students. There were more options than students, which worked well because students could spread out.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area one: Table area with stools from Ikea (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area two: Scoop chairs on the carpet (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area three: Yoga mats in the back of the room (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area four: Table area with exercise balls in crates (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area five: Table area with exercise cusions (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area six: camping chairs in the classroom library (2)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Area seven: lap desks (4)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
4) Communicate with parents. <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/EDITABLE-FREEBIE-Flexible-Seating-Letter-2494335">Texas Lone Star Teaching</a> has a great freebie with a letter to parents. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<b>Affordable Options</b></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7keBO3sJdzIxqi9l1OfrJPwF8AdTGat-IHx-Oi0DG83lvn1tfX18gMr73U3OT7ZTlSO7uKB8hKJHuur0dJy5rCU7-3ZJ-oGMnfD2SegsKl74GPOBSfCeRb02XMgCp3UFdW6n12B9OGXI/s1600/yoga+mats+flexible+seating.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7keBO3sJdzIxqi9l1OfrJPwF8AdTGat-IHx-Oi0DG83lvn1tfX18gMr73U3OT7ZTlSO7uKB8hKJHuur0dJy5rCU7-3ZJ-oGMnfD2SegsKl74GPOBSfCeRb02XMgCp3UFdW6n12B9OGXI/s320/yoga+mats+flexible+seating.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Yoga mats are an easy way to add flexible seating. Students use clipboard and can work on the floor. They also are easy to stack and store. I have found yoga mats at Target and Walmart for $7. They can also be cut into smaller sections.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/American-Plastic-Rocker-Childrens-Chairs/dp/B0155IJH00/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1483393298&sr=8-1&keywords=scoop+chairs">Scoop chairs</a> come in a set of six on Amazon and are about $8 each. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90184047/">Ikea</a> has stools that are very reasonably priced (about $5.99). These were used with a table group.<br />
<br />
Lapdesks are available at Hobby Lobby during certain seasons for less than $6.<br />
<br />
Beach chairs go on clearance at the end of summer. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
Students at my school love STEM projects because they are hands-on and engaging. I'm not sure they realize how much problem solving and higher level thinking they are doing!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The story Twenty One Elephants and Still Standing is about how to test the sturdiness of the Brooklyn Bridge (which took 14 years to build), the circus tested it by having 21 elephants cross it. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzAMzW8cre2zEDcZrrhfF5oYrSCFNMyegc7BTBCjKfqxmWUJnH7YkLEGV0BtCEMi8VSknZFreYH_-3Td-pMEkWE-fmd1Uwqi5VHz1frlO0DaWgVpOZ0DvciuqRvz89D3GWfFVfDxw5Wb0/s1600/images.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzAMzW8cre2zEDcZrrhfF5oYrSCFNMyegc7BTBCjKfqxmWUJnH7YkLEGV0BtCEMi8VSknZFreYH_-3Td-pMEkWE-fmd1Uwqi5VHz1frlO0DaWgVpOZ0DvciuqRvz89D3GWfFVfDxw5Wb0/s200/images.jpeg" width="152" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
One STEM project I have done with students is to have students create a bridge for 21 elephants. I did not have elephants, but I did have bears. You could also use other manipulatives to represent the 21 elephants. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFXyd3vDuW34Ku_43gWoYkibrUfRG0Xof3OvsY-0nvB1pbGWiH_-lwrHNRTOrq6vuh61Ka_iotEj1soVXk4se-SVV_MzVVLZvyBGP8BHaV0Q-Qd6YUw5Yw95h4tpamsZBqxxBo2o29Ky4/s1600/a464bc1d943aa2627ccd93c8a3f23d96.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiFXyd3vDuW34Ku_43gWoYkibrUfRG0Xof3OvsY-0nvB1pbGWiH_-lwrHNRTOrq6vuh61Ka_iotEj1soVXk4se-SVV_MzVVLZvyBGP8BHaV0Q-Qd6YUw5Yw95h4tpamsZBqxxBo2o29Ky4/s400/a464bc1d943aa2627ccd93c8a3f23d96.jpg" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
When using the engineering design process, students need to be able to design and plan their solutions. Then they make their model and test it. Finally, they reflect on the process.<br />
<br />
My <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/STEM-Journal-2875877">STEM Journal</a> is a great way for students to document their thinking. <br />
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/STEM-Journal-2875877"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjggBPYfY9QEI3gAyzusWeqNK0J5PrbpgvmWJAa5NZNgowUjd1rpckgDVtH1_K4wU0A3mnjoGdNi2PywYHI9jr-DL3B3CrbdRIrmJt2SDGwYFMZzDu6_tmn0A0WGTEWXbdA9CssQ91Cnds/s320/stem+journal+cover.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>

Communication and Language Development Ideas<div style="text-align: center;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgWuRLDkA-IXUNLHxpACMbhVtXSOogAVHJwzL5Qujb8cjhn3Qmuhc-jSSY4WVmXMkUrytqYpC6bueTchJDCSon7hX6fU_6QEa8tYIvqXNoOADqaDQON_Fmp1bE3AALq6YM97IRc2-ckjs/s1600/cover+language+development+ideas.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgWuRLDkA-IXUNLHxpACMbhVtXSOogAVHJwzL5Qujb8cjhn3Qmuhc-jSSY4WVmXMkUrytqYpC6bueTchJDCSon7hX6fU_6QEa8tYIvqXNoOADqaDQON_Fmp1bE3AALq6YM97IRc2-ckjs/s640/cover+language+development+ideas.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
Language development is something near and dear to my heart! </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Implementing techniques to improve student's language development will work with any curriculum and any standards!</div>
<br />
I teach in a school where the children come to school without language experiences. This means, the students that come to kindergarten are coming to school with a vocabulary that is half of their peers that do have language experiences (books read to them and opportunities to talk and share in experiences outside the home). <br />
<br />
I'm including some ideas that are easy to implement in the primary grades to help decrease this gap and provide students with rich opportunities to experience language. The best thing is that these are all free!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
1) Answer in complete sentences!</div>
This is really easy to implement. When asked a question, by a teacher or students, they are answered in complete sentences. This is something that the teacher models. For example, if a student asks, "Where do I turn in this paper?" Instead of pointing or saying, "over there," you would respond with, "You may turn in your paper to the red bin on the shelves." It takes some practice and consistency, and I've learned that it may take many times to model- especially in kindergarten. It is fine to provide students with a model. However, I always make them repeat the entire sentence. This is kind of what it looks like. To be proactive, many times, when we are first learning, I will start the sentence frame for them.<br />
<br />
Teacher: Where did the story take place? The story took place in the...<br />
Student: The story took place in the house.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
2) Asking the right questions!</div>
When learning about language development decontextualized talk has a huge impact on language development and thinking. What is decontextualized talk? Decontextualized talk is talk about the past or future; discussions about abstract objects or ideas that are not present. Asking thought provoking questions that will encourage discussion is a great way to help students develop language and vocabulary!<br />
<br />
What do you think will happen next?<br />
Why do you think that?<br />
What would you do if you were in this story?<br />
<br />
This <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Language-Development-Read-Aloud-Questions-FREEBIE-2801012">freebie</a> can be kept on your clipboard as a reminder to ask questions that get students thinking and using decontextualized text. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Language-Development-Read-Aloud-Questions-FREEBIE-2801012"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjIo3P509XOX24_xC2lfzfxAW0mpY2utF9rbpAmVQyKXiCECKlHOI6i0l-s2hDsjdw4ti097vXudaMbHF3d63ZNd_GBM-ZvtlIRsVQZLIMJN8O10S1gxUTl7YLANKZBMIbWF5PgNIFOrxM/s400/Talk+is+Free+language+development+ideas+slide+1.jpg" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
One way to do this is through reading books...which leads to number 3.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
3) More read alouds!</div>
Read alouds are a great way to get children talking! Asking questions that are beyond the text is critical. It is also important that the teachers are not just calling on one student to answer the questions. <br />
<br />
Turn and Talk is one way to have students share. All students have a carpet partner, and when teachers stop during read alouds and ask a question, they end it with, "turn and talk." I like to assign students A/B partners. This helps make sure that everyone is getting a chance to talk.<br />
I like to find read aloud stories that have some sort of problem or an event that causes the characters to change. Here are a few of my favorite authors that really get students talking!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOBdJ5mdKtPxVAllHHN-AoOTx40mj9u4LDMwTkmHzpUAU6eNe2ZULaPEy-7qxsNUcrJvQx_zdm7pu8k_H29DUG17fX_CWE5AdyDsDExatQG4v07h8xgw6e99O6fDJ9x4lTOpp2la4GtOU/s1600/language+development+read+aloud.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOBdJ5mdKtPxVAllHHN-AoOTx40mj9u4LDMwTkmHzpUAU6eNe2ZULaPEy-7qxsNUcrJvQx_zdm7pu8k_H29DUG17fX_CWE5AdyDsDExatQG4v07h8xgw6e99O6fDJ9x4lTOpp2la4GtOU/s400/language+development+read+aloud.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
4) Experiences that involve critical thinking and talking about ideas.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There isn't enough time in the day. Two times that work for my schedule are "morning work" time when the students get to school and have breakfast and math workstations. I love the Target Dollar Spot for this as well as common objects such as:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ul>
<li>popsicle sticks</li>
<li>newspapers</li>
<li>unifix cubes</li>
<li>straws</li>
<li>ping pong balls</li>
<li>solo cups</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Each week, we have a question that students focus on to help provide some structure and focus. Some of the popular questions are the following:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
<ol>
<li>What is the tallest tower you can build before it falls down? What can you do to make your tower taller?</li>
<li>Can you build a bridge that will support 10 unified cubes? Can you build a bridge that will support 20 unified cubes. What if you make your bridge longer? What if you make your bridge wider?</li>
<li>Can you create a rollercoaster that a ping pong ball can ride?</li>
<li>Can you make a pyramid taller than you? </li>
</ol>
<br />
With all these ideas, the most important part is that students are having an opportunity to share their ideas and learning with their peers and you!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
During our school-wide intervention time, in grades K-1, when teachers are teaching phonemic awareness, they are focusing on the following skills:</div>
<ul>
<li>concept of spoken words (clapping for each word in a sentence)</li>
<li>rhyming</li>
<li>beginning sounds</li>
<li>segmenting onset and rhyme </li>
<li>segmenting words</li>
<li>changing words based on initial sounds</li>
<li>changing words based on ending sounds</li>
<li>blending words </li>
</ul>
In 10 minutes, you can pack quite a bit into a phonics/phonemic awareness RTI lesson. When students come to me we work primarily on phonemic awareness, but I also include some phonics. For phonemic awareness, I use this <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Common-Core-Phonemic-Awareness-Activities-Distinguishing-Sounds-30-Days-402794">Phonemic Awareness</a> set to teach phonemic awareness. I can store everything I need for my intervention groups in a binder. It is all organized by the phonemic <br />

In my binder, I include all the word lists (on the left) in page protectors. Any materials for the students, I keep in the pockets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDZyQDkpoz1nNMemC1ULQzrKRIHHAPvXdTyWKi6Q_3jqFu7JlrJPVi-8XZcIOovnhWno47aY_gB0XcK1SbFPpPjjfrELzCXrxXH1vwCT7_Kd1iubBlHTcq0RBLyngBfKi-jDcTDyAOIA/s1600/phonemic+binder+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSDZyQDkpoz1nNMemC1ULQzrKRIHHAPvXdTyWKi6Q_3jqFu7JlrJPVi-8XZcIOovnhWno47aY_gB0XcK1SbFPpPjjfrELzCXrxXH1vwCT7_Kd1iubBlHTcq0RBLyngBfKi-jDcTDyAOIA/s400/phonemic+binder+2.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">This set includes practice for the following skills:</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Counting how many words are in a sentence</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Beginning sounds</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Ending sounds</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Middle sounds</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Rhyming Words</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Segmenting Words</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">Substituting sounds</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">To give you an idea of how much practice their is for each skill...when beginning sounds are practiced, each day there are 15 words to practice with (different words each day). There are also six sets of words that students have to decide if they begin the with the same sound.</span><br style="color: #202020;" /><span style="background-color: white; color: #202020;">CVC words, CVCe words, and words with blends (truck, slide, clock, etc) are included.</span></span><br />
<br />
Examples of Learning Targets:<br />
1) I can count the words in a sentence.<br />
2) I can<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;"> ident</span>ify the beginning sound of a word.<br />
3) I can identify the ending sound of a word.<br />
4) I can write the letter that corresponds to a beginning sound.<br />
5) I can make word families.<br />
<br />
When we first start out we count the words in a sentence. Students move their puff ball to mark each word. Then we move to marking the sounds we hear in words. This is also included in my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Phonemic-Awareness-Pack-30-Days-of-Sound-Activities-402794">Phonemic Awareness Pack</a>!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Phonemic-Awareness-Pack-30-Days-of-Sound-Activities-402794"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhH6YF7bEtbVE_l-7JN2h53yqr24ygnbGn1g4fB-dL_3S1eYzPuJsobCIZMQHpCkkn_EMcsQyCTGk3y4hwW88FhUFmkak-bSFr22C43lfcF2dYcy6dnD9Yaocp4RjMXQjdBajAq3YSEGRQ/s400/counting+words.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
To practice beginning sounds I show picture cards and we do a round robin. Students collect the cards they answer correctly. To practice the ending sound repeat the same process. All of these cards are included, plus additional cards to practice beginning, middle, and ending sounds, as well as rhyming.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbwfAFHEYn5wn8hfI704480s0Th8_DpBI3mtgFtM5KtAeHbc2bREqzRTo1yZd37IldI_-m5fWYdCu3tWs9cPePwj4P4psM9ztCEar9JFEXGI6Rg4nltPS1vfXuAjaqyaL7uhbzCQMf4mo/s1600/phonemic+binder+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgbwfAFHEYn5wn8hfI704480s0Th8_DpBI3mtgFtM5KtAeHbc2bREqzRTo1yZd37IldI_-m5fWYdCu3tWs9cPePwj4P4psM9ztCEar9JFEXGI6Rg4nltPS1vfXuAjaqyaL7uhbzCQMf4mo/s400/phonemic+binder+3.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Then they get a dry erase board, and write the beginning sound. We also we play "show down" with the white boards. As I show a picture card, students write the letter. Students hide their answers until everyone is done, and then I point to a student to say "Show Down." Then all students share their board with the group. These picture cards are from my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Beginning-Sounds-Activity-Pack-with-Games-717161">beginning sound pack</a>. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We also do picture sorts with beginning sounds that are also included in the <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Beginning-Sounds-Activity-Pack-with-Games-717161">beginning sound pack.</a></div>

When we are practicing CVC words. Students get <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Common-Core-Phonemic-Awareness-and-CVC-Blending-Picture-Cards-835658">picture cards</a> and start making a list of the words.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Sound-Boxes-for-CVC-Blending-835658"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjCFuAQD6JqWQXTO7ipYXtRj65xbxYeXFbaNAP-8qWR1X2Yd6KSUYznuAvAOjv8bcJWtGXgEgpf9VMg2XrT-PdTbt6mKJvH-r-cNIlJ4nQI7acqV7A3HkxWRa44062K68F2n8fFAwMfx7c/s1600/IMG_4074.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
Then they pick their favorite word (and they get another dry erase board) and make a list of words with that word family.<br />
<br />
Last year, when I went through 7 years of data at our building, it was the best data (and this was a challenging group of students)!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<b><span style="color: magenta;">Additional Resources</span></b><br />
I made these dice from the Dollar Tree into consonants and vowels. Students roll words...in this version, they only wrote down read words on the dry erase board.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjooW_00kdkDPLOwgELIz7nb0Jx97juXcOu-ca_Mjsrm-bL3rrK4EIO59O9ymvJ-1VRdk3pK31xghlfy-3JQI8J8IC18ePOSXPaosknaJca74K9aLha9v8rkUpvtiGLS7V9Jqjnzwv1Q44/s1600/IMG_2402.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjooW_00kdkDPLOwgELIz7nb0Jx97juXcOu-ca_Mjsrm-bL3rrK4EIO59O9ymvJ-1VRdk3pK31xghlfy-3JQI8J8IC18ePOSXPaosknaJca74K9aLha9v8rkUpvtiGLS7V9Jqjnzwv1Q44/s400/IMG_2402.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
One of my "go to" resources is always the <a href="http://www.fcrr.org/curriculum/PDF/G2-3/2-3PA_3.pdf">FCCR</a>. I have found so many different ways to use their ideas! In the picture below, each student has a bag of words, and they get to "point" to the word that rhymes with the word I say. The students love getting to use the "pointer"! That has been a GREAT Dollar Store find :)</div>

Another resource I like is Phonemic Awareness: Playing with Sounds to Strengthen Beginning Reading Skills. Not only are there TONS of ideas that can easily be used without making copies. This sound bag idea is from the book. I also like sending bags home, and letting students bring in objects from home.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZAkS_Ev9J7U8eKmzsqa_3468W51FKprr79fDRTKRWP9JwS8CqWVMzc7j4bK3a5ciQoJltY7fkQ7MRbhm7n5hDT2mOj-_mEuj-AGPStjVXkB30bXrhdIrnA72sj-FKvnU_qxgNlYRw3E/s1600/phonics+jpg.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGZAkS_Ev9J7U8eKmzsqa_3468W51FKprr79fDRTKRWP9JwS8CqWVMzc7j4bK3a5ciQoJltY7fkQ7MRbhm7n5hDT2mOj-_mEuj-AGPStjVXkB30bXrhdIrnA72sj-FKvnU_qxgNlYRw3E/s400/phonics+jpg.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
I always try and have students practice phonics skills in context. Practicing skills in isolation make it much hard for students to transfer what they are learning. These are some of my favorite ways for extra phonics practice in context. <br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Read the Room</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love using "Read the Room" at a workstation. Students can use clipboards and practice finding words hidden around the room based on the skills they are learning. I use all sorts of "Read the Room" cards to practice a variety of phonics skills. Here is a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Christmas-and-Winter-Read-the-Room-1583724">freebie</a> to see what my read the rooms are like!</div>
<div style="text-align: start;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Build it! Write it! Draw it!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My students love these! </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Phonics Task Cards</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I've also used phonics task cards at a word work work station. In addition, they make a great warm-up during guided reading. Here is a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREE-R-Controlled-Reading-Task-Cards-2298343">freebie</a> to try! You can click on the picture below to see my bundle of task cards. <div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Decodable Books (A to Z)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I love how Reading A to Z has decodable books. I like having decodable books available that are in a workstation based on the skills I have been teaching. They are really easy to differentiate and can reinforce phonics skills. I am very fortunate that my PTO purchased my license! It is well worth it :)</div>

I love using <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/CCSS-Sight-Word-Mats-FREE-1350721">Sight Word Mats</a>! They are a great work station for kindergarten. I can easily change out the manipulatives and the students get practice with the sight words they need in a tactile way. They are also an easy to differentiate work station!</div>

I use my <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Instructional-Coaching-Binder-Editable-Forms-2590676">coaching binder</a> every day. I love having all my information in one place. This summer, I added an option if you want to have a digital option. Included in the updated file is a link to a Google Slide file.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
In terms of keeping a digital binder, I have found that what works for me is to have a folder for each grade level and then a folder for each teacher. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaEsPyK5274w_9YXlenqTuPs-aj64qWhMziCWG5HMOsEtZWoBhsMeDe5DGrjvpY4gzRY_oPS93wXRzu5oLK4buoxrtu7HCewCPd498zr_Wl9E0CyI7PRPxcyvgo8ZUhB8alTWxSNaI1VQ/s1600/coaching+binder.png" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaEsPyK5274w_9YXlenqTuPs-aj64qWhMziCWG5HMOsEtZWoBhsMeDe5DGrjvpY4gzRY_oPS93wXRzu5oLK4buoxrtu7HCewCPd498zr_Wl9E0CyI7PRPxcyvgo8ZUhB8alTWxSNaI1VQ/s320/coaching+binder.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You can copy and paste from the original Google Slide document to create additional Slide documents. Make sure you right click 'copy' and then if you create a new slide set the PAGE SIZE as 8.5x11. Then PASTE into a new blank slide. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The digital option can be edited and adjusted to fit your needs. When you open the file, you'll see that many titles say ADD TEXT HERE or TEXT. For this form, I use it to take notes. </div>

This form is for classroom observations. You can add notes. It is different than the paper version in the binder, because you type directly in it, and don't check boxes.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX0cCY9Yx9QlyZWR77Q8RMykZMNFc3FZcb6pqr91nemF15ieKUsvnVGuqgFMZ9XFpsUgbymo_EDLapHg-ed16hG8QvNrlsYSfcS6bZyPT-9mMSBwsPuh_0vVUBSJQX0cTamdGX_qweiwQ/s1600/Word+Wall+cover.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhX0cCY9Yx9QlyZWR77Q8RMykZMNFc3FZcb6pqr91nemF15ieKUsvnVGuqgFMZ9XFpsUgbymo_EDLapHg-ed16hG8QvNrlsYSfcS6bZyPT-9mMSBwsPuh_0vVUBSJQX0cTamdGX_qweiwQ/s400/Word+Wall+cover.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Word walls can take up quite a bit of room, so I want to make sure I'm getting the most out of them.<br />
<br />
When I put a new word on the word wall, before the word is placed on the word wall, we say the word, spell the word, snap and spell the word and then I use the word in a sentence. With student's Kagan partner, each student uses the word in a sentence. <br />
<br />
I try and refer to the word wall all day long. This means it has to be placed in a location where it is visible no matter where we are in the room. If I'm at my guided reading table, I want to be able to reference it.<br />
<br />
I started putting the words on different colors, and it has made a big difference in helping students pick out words. I can say, "that" is the word that is on green, next to "so." It has helped students find words much more efficiently. I also find that I encourage the word wall more. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNB0aqC3EjGtxdAZBKFKGoIfVHGVEBK0cYXRklPGDlAB9Og73L_0fnEhTOv3V3yEwnmutaZ_NfV24TouJj-TpMiEUre0fbOVznl_nN1nwc9EbqMd7lOOdfYcr3rue5YO9uCF4LqZHz11E/s1600/IMG_8581.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNB0aqC3EjGtxdAZBKFKGoIfVHGVEBK0cYXRklPGDlAB9Og73L_0fnEhTOv3V3yEwnmutaZ_NfV24TouJj-TpMiEUre0fbOVznl_nN1nwc9EbqMd7lOOdfYcr3rue5YO9uCF4LqZHz11E/s400/IMG_8581.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
Since the purpose is to have the students take ownership of the word wall and use it as a reference, I have had them place the words on the word wall when we add new words. <br />
<br />
Some ways to use the word wall daily are by incorporating it into a work station. <a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/8mm0pgmbq395leb/word%20wall%20hunt.pdf?dl=0">Here is a free download</a> that I use with students to practice finding words on the word wall.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.dropbox.com/s/8mm0pgmbq395leb/word%20wall%20hunt.pdf?dl=0"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOVPmLU6uCRBoTbPlafmzfMtV-rZEP9BKF1lrQcQe5DN_2FP-N8UPdEDKSEXeV4l-U11daPQYP0hyOv7CmQYVjkD_Qy3Mz4Tt0MzOCCbNK6HgNjWdRwKA9XDt-mnEPLWvLJyLxlnM5v0M/s400/word+wall+hunt.png" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Another freebie that will help your students is a <a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Personal-Word-Wall-for-Students-EDITABLE-3189138">personal word wall</a>. It comes with two files (one that you can edit). </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYU12CWL_fe7Yvsk-z2wF_4gLhKbW-DSfkpEyOLNd_nb_S6CrpWl2jxs0XbHXzIU3McOPq_k5HzpMEC9JZ14kYHmXtzjlC5z_PLUxSRzqKpt__4Yt9GowVrwXYya8zoHKEYI4nOlapdqw/s1600/Slide08.jpg" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYU12CWL_fe7Yvsk-z2wF_4gLhKbW-DSfkpEyOLNd_nb_S6CrpWl2jxs0XbHXzIU3McOPq_k5HzpMEC9JZ14kYHmXtzjlC5z_PLUxSRzqKpt__4Yt9GowVrwXYya8zoHKEYI4nOlapdqw/s320/Slide08.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I've also had students make their own personal word wall by using spiral-bound index cards. Back-to-school time is the perfect time to find them! Students (or the teacher) write each letter on each page. As words are added to the word wall, students add to their personal word wall.</div>

We've been remodeling our house. It hasn't been very expensive, because it has mostly been paint and our labor! We had dark brown trim from 1985 and we are replacing or painting all the trim white. This is an "after" picture in my office. I had looked for months at gallery walls. This is what I did! (As I look at this picture, I think I need to make sure everything is straight)!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. I'm not a great cook, but I like making treats! Each day, we have a school-wide theme and special guest readers for each classroom. Our guest readers include local news anchors, local authors, college sports players, and our superintendent. The students get to dress a certain way each day based on a book title. For my reading groups, I make treats. Here is this year's theme days and the treats I will be making!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
On this day, all students are allowed to wear a hat, and I bring Cat in the Hat Hats. Over the years, I have found that this recipe is the easiest! The Oreos provide a great base! My son and husband are happy to eat the Oreo tops! I love teaching with magnetic letters, especially during word work at guided reading. I also use magnetic letters at the following work stations:<br />
<br />
<ul>
<li>Word Work</li>
<li>Sight Words</li>
<li>Spelling</li>
<li>iPads</li>
</ul>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Building-Words-Short-Vowel-Word-Cards-2519406"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhqWozSF9IpCchngRIxPtSUd0awwzMzfjRkKxaeV-jDGPuS0oJ_fLBKj8Jq91ZLTkjMIdcz35EG0oPHbjLUWvllA1IGKhAWXMsuqiP3bZde-bOJgD0vefQAUQpvrSBsPv2QixguGzIhoR0/s320/making+words+building+words.jpg" width="296" /></a></div>
<br />
My favorite magnetic letters are from <a href="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C931%2C684&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1484502285697">Lakeshore Learning</a> because they have the vowels in red. They can be purchased as an individual set for about $9 or you can get a classroom set that has 240 letters for about $45. <br />
<br />
My biggest issue is how to keep them organized. I have found that each workstation needs their own set of letters. Depending on the goal of the work station, I may change out how students are working with letters. For example, if it is for a group of students that is still struggling with their letters and sounds, I always make sure that the letters are organized. This container can be found at a craft store for about $3. It is study and has a lid. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEmTv1_CVliDA7S1U1TJw3XVRwVg00t-p6plfZGFRlMb3Z5bxR5cRagQA7KmZN9o9-23aVQtpcYJEAQLYTuIKbgsiCNHR0wePQVcGHAiut3baeYMYfi3-xPvJc7C-9oH8yyZ39jhEMMkc/s1600/shopping.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjEmTv1_CVliDA7S1U1TJw3XVRwVg00t-p6plfZGFRlMb3Z5bxR5cRagQA7KmZN9o9-23aVQtpcYJEAQLYTuIKbgsiCNHR0wePQVcGHAiut3baeYMYfi3-xPvJc7C-9oH8yyZ39jhEMMkc/s320/shopping.jpeg" width="304" /></a></div>
I have also had great luck at work stations using the container that the magnetic letter organizer that comes with the classroom set at <a href="http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/product/productDet.jsp?productItemID=1%2C689%2C949%2C371%2C931%2C756&ASSORTMENT%3C%3East_id=1408474395181113&bmUID=1484505560293">Lakeshore Learning.</a> <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje8sRoDHPcsM8dljpbFc86eqf4GlnR5veBccqXDfoE5zEKCkRf6EHPafdJ6G9BBOPgflPA0WgUHOAAIwmDYqE8rKoAAi4wasAV5MBL1QLyc7m8ueObDCYOTaKTbeqfjivUaes_A8UR3qo/s1600/Screen+Shot+2017-01-15+at+11.44.25+AM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEje8sRoDHPcsM8dljpbFc86eqf4GlnR5veBccqXDfoE5zEKCkRf6EHPafdJ6G9BBOPgflPA0WgUHOAAIwmDYqE8rKoAAi4wasAV5MBL1QLyc7m8ueObDCYOTaKTbeqfjivUaes_A8UR3qo/s320/Screen+Shot+2017-01-15+at+11.44.25+AM.png" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
If I want students, to have to "search" for letters, I will give them a container. Over the years, I have found that as long as I don't put too many letters in a container without a lid, they stack just fine. Many times I can find cute ones at the Dollar Store that are 4 for $1!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm7O5WQYvEtcU25aByEsqS43-kPEqn6mfhXxKunoTJjPFIVZKOSR6mPafIqMVeAiVBPLhlpkVXcCjnmeVQO99rM1dKNdIgeBnLgfu8ltdSQLpH2ixXzD0vjEFH7DtUZzoS8ESPDUSGFzY/s1600/IMG_0986.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhm7O5WQYvEtcU25aByEsqS43-kPEqn6mfhXxKunoTJjPFIVZKOSR6mPafIqMVeAiVBPLhlpkVXcCjnmeVQO99rM1dKNdIgeBnLgfu8ltdSQLpH2ixXzD0vjEFH7DtUZzoS8ESPDUSGFzY/s320/IMG_0986.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Then for small group guided reading, I don't want students to have all the letters at once because it is too overwhelming. I found these containers from Glad work perfect! The students love the Frozen and Star Wars theme! I specifically pick the letters I want for word work each week. This way word work time is used efficiently. I have a fifth grade volunteer that helps me with this on Fridays. <br />

I try and bring out a different "special" work station to practice with word work and sight words each week. Stamps, Play Doh, Bingo Stampers, and Guess the Sight Word are all very exciting to my students!!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<span style="text-align: center;">The Guess the Sight Word set is one of the favorites! Students have a key and need to figure out the sight words by using the key. I use foam letters, magnetic letters, or dry erase markers. You can download a </span><a href="https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/FREE-Mystery-Sight-Word-Game-for-Work-Stations-2310762" style="text-align: center;">sample set for free</a><span style="text-align: center;">! </span><br />

After I did my How to Catch an Elf activity with my second grade group, one of the boys begged me to ask the teacher to let the whole class read the book during, "whole g. reading" :) That's what he calls whole group reading!<br />
