Best Practice Book Study: Chapters 1 and 2

I was super excited to find out about this book study.  If you look at my blog name, you can tell that this book was perfect for me :)

I love that the chapters are short... you can get lots of ideas in a quick amount of time!!!  So far, the theme I see running through the book is students have to be engaged in what they are learning.  Chapter 1 focused on discussion and Chapter 2 focused on drawing.  Here are ways I can incorporate ideas with my students.

  1. It's so funny - I've had my kids draw definitions for different vocabulary they might encounter while reading, but I could never really articulate WHY I did that. This book is so validating on so many levels!

  2. Interesting.....looks like a great book! I totally agree about allowing students to draw......kids REALLY need to learn how to visualize, as usually that is a big point of break down in comprehension. I'll be interested to see what the other chapters hold :)

  3. I love your thought about including drawing as part of literacy workstations every day. Aside from illustrating stories they wrote, I don't think I ever offered my students enough art opportunities in that portion of the day.

  6. I too feel like I need to be more aware of different ways I can incorporate higher level thinking activities into my daily routines. I love having my kiddos draw vocabulary words. It makes the learning so much more meaningful for them. We also act out our vocabulary words... kids love this and it helps them make connections to the words.
